Security firms 'overstate hackers' abilities to boost sales'

Technical director of the UK's National Cyber Security Centre, Dr Ian Levy, has accused computer security companies of "massively" exaggerating the abilities of malicious hackers in order to sell their security hardware and services.

He said they exaggerated the hackers' skills and used hyperbolic language to describe cyberthreats, implying that they alone could defeat hackers with their magical hardware.

Dr Levy praised the work of the NCSC, set up in October to help protect the UK from cyber-attacks, in protecting one UK government department from attack, and urged other businesses to follow its advice.
