It is traditional at this time of year for companies to write ‘end of year’ blog posts or newsletters sharing all they’ve achieved in the past 12 months.
I thought that instead of celebrating our corporate success, which has only limited appeal to members of the UKN Group team, I would use this blog to celebrate the work of the charities we’ve given to in the last year.
UKN Group Main Charity: The Pelican Cancer Foundation
Throughout the year we support our main charity by donating every time we receive a completed customer satisfaction survey. In 2015 and 2016 this charity has been the Pelican Cancer Foundation.
This local charity, based in Basingstoke, has an international focus on curing cancer and improving the quality of life for cancer patients. The Pelican Cancer Foundation sponsors innovative research into the treatment of specific cancers and related diseases. Much of this funding goes to clinical trials, ensuring that people living with cancer can benefit from the latest treatments and approaches today.
The charity also runs training courses and workshops for cancer specialists that cover the latest advances in cancer treatment, technology and surgery techniques. The ethos of the Foundation is to bring clinicians together to encourage learning, collaboration and discussion, and for driving improvements in cancer care.
Michael Eaton, UKN Group CEO, says;
We are very proud to continue supporting this local charity in its very important work, and to build upon the good work already underway and completed.
Supporting Our Staff And Their Charity Aims
During 2016 UKN Group have also supported other charity initiatives as a result of our employees’ involvement and commitment. Since December 2015 we have donated to the following charities:
- Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance
- Wear It Pink – Breast Cancer Now
- Limington House School
- Children With Cancer UK
- The Salvation Army
- Partner Schools Worldwide
- Jeans For Genes
Cake sales, raffles, sponsored swims, and dressing-up have all been part of our fundraising efforts. In many cases we’ve supported charity events for several years, whereas other events are new this year and have been brought to our attention by a staff member.
A special mention should go to Val Burrows, our Business Services Manager, who coordinates the UKN Group ‘Tuck Shop’. This is an on-going fundraising scheme supporting Limington House School, a local school for children with severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. Money raised by UKN Group this year was used to purchase important sensory equipment for the nursery department.
E-Cards For The Salvation Army
We also decided last Christmas not to send out printed Christmas cards, instead we embraced technology and sent out e-cards and donated the money we saved to The Salvation Army. Clients, staff and suppliers warmly supported this gesture; it has helped draw their attention to the work of this organisation at Christmas time and reduced the amount of paper waste too.
We’ll be looking to support The Salvation Army again this year.
Our charity giving is not just limited to UKN Group’s main charity, or those causes our staff want to support. We have also donated to fundraising events our clients and suppliers are involved in. One such example is Partner Schools Worldwide, an organisation that facilitates collaboration between schools in the west and those in countries such as Ghana.
Students from one of our local schools are visiting their partner school next year to participate in projects such as improving the infrastructure and facilities in the school, learning initiatives and cultural engage. We were delighted to be able to sponsor a UKN Group supplier’s daughter who is fundraising for this visit; she completed a 5k swim as part of her overall fundraising efforts.
In the last 12 months we are proud to report that we have donated £1,370 to the charities mentioned above. The team at UKN Group look forward to getting involved in more charity fundraising events and programmes in 2017.
